Tips For Wall Fastener Installation

A home just isn’t a home without all the unique pictures and works of art that are placed on the wall. Some of them are quite heavy so it is important that they are properly secured to the wall. Otherwise you could end up with someone getting injured, the art being ruined, or the wall being damaged. With the use of a wall fastener you won’t have to worry about any of these issues occurring. It is important that you install the wall fastener correctly though. Not all wall fasteners out there offer the same quality and security, so make sure you start with a good product. You will pay a little bit more but it is well worth it to know the wall fastener is going to be sturdy and reliable. Some of the various wall fasteners out there only work on walls made from a certain kind of material. Make sure you buy those that will work well for your type of walls or you are asking for trouble. The majority of walls are made from either drywall or plaster. Others are made from a combination of brick, glass, concrete, tile, or wood. The wall fasteners will also have a maximum weight that they are designed for. Don’t use them for something that weighs more than what this information tells you they can hold. Doing so will result in the wall hanging being unsafe. Look for wall fasteners that are designed for your specific purpose. If you are hanging a heavy mirror than look for one that is specifically designed for that purpose. Most of the wall fasteners that are worth using require you to find a stud in the wall. You can easily accomplish this with the use of a stud finder. Once you determine the distance between each stud you can easily plan how you want to decorate your walls. If you are hanging something light you can often get away with not using a stud. Don’t attempt this for the heavy items though because you may end up damaging the wall so much you will have to pay to have it repaired. You will find the different types of wall fasteners require different tools for installing them. Generally you will be able to complete the project with the use of a screwdriver, hammer, stud locator, and a drill. Sometimes you will need to purchase additional screws as well. If you are working on a plaster wall you may need to drill a small hole to get the screw into the fastener. This will prevent the plaster from cracking. Wall fasteners work with many different accessories including anchors, plugs, and toggles. You will also need to drill a hole in the wall if you need to insert a plug. This will allow it to fit in the wall properly and hold your wall hangings. With a toggle bolt you will need to drill a hole that is slightly bigger than the wings of the toggle bolt. With the screw expansion anchor you will be able to screw the bolt into the hole. This allows the item to be securely placed on the wall. With a plastic toggle anchor you will be able to move the flexible arms. You will need to pinch them together and then press them until they are flush with the wall. Make sure you take the time to evaluate what you need before you go to you local hardware store. Knowing the type of material the wall is made from and the weight of the items you plan to hang up will make shopping for wall fasteners much easier for you.
